Flickr Mashups

Mashups were interesting to look at but I didn't find much practical use for them. I'm just amazed at how much time people use to come up with these things! I found one mashup that scans for letters you specify in flickr photos to create a word...interesting but where am i going to use this again? Maybe if I have a website but how practical is this in other applications?
